GRNBOUNCERgif ANIMALS OF MAUI

Near Wailea
Bird was trying to find it's mother which was waiting near by. I released the baby near the mother, and they were happily reunited. So strange... I did not see any other babies. I do not know if they nest on the ground or in trees.

Grey Francolin?

Grey Francolin?

This is not the mother, but is of the same type.

Brown Dove
I don't know what kind of dove this is. I just call it a brown dove. That is MY name. They love the ground and walk there continually. They are very tame.

Zebra Dove

Any one familiar with the islands will recognize this dove. They are tame. They walk around in pairs, under your feet, under cars, in restaurants, and on lawns. They make pleasant cooing calls so characteristic of the islands. Perhaps a Zebra Dove?

There is also a dove that has spots around the neck. Next time I see one, I will get a picture.

In the parking lot outside
WorldMark in Kihei

I think this is a Spotted Dove.
Tame and common.

I found a camelion squashed on the roads ounce. So sad and unfortunate.

This one was in no danger, but I could not resist these very tame creatures. Unbelievably tame!

GECKO.JPG, 77 kB One of these things fell from the ceiling one night, and landed on my bare stomach. Actually, it was more of a deliberate "jump". Perhaps he was trying to get a cockroach, and lost his footing. I don't know. But I sure wish he would have given me some warning. After all, all my screaming may have frighted my wife.

This one is ok; jumping and playing on a bromeliad. They love bromeliads, because bromeliads have water in the center folds which attracts insects.

I got this Gecko while my wife and I were seated outside a restaurant. We were eating ice cream cones, and enjoying the weather. My wife likes to talk and look at people and other normal things, and obviously I like to look at lizards. I could not help but notice that this thing was jumping from it's red bromeliad to a garbage can. There it would ambuse files. I saw this one catch a fly in midair. He just snatched it right out of the air! The fly was simply flying too close to such an adept killer.

Nene

2005.APR.04
State bird
Near Waikapu

Nenes are down-right tame on Kauai, but only slightly "approachable" on Maui. I don't know why the difference in tameness. I can't see how their young are safe from all the feral domestic cats and mongooses.

Picture was taken with a disposable camera, obviously very close up to the Nene.

This red bird is fairly common, but never on the ground as the other two common birds. This one is in the trees, and is not tame. This particular bird landed near me when I was ready with a camera. He was only there for a fleeting one or two seconds. Too late for him; I got the shot. Later I looked at the picture and it was near perfect. Lucky shot!

Some kind of Cardinal?

Toad
Maui does have toads.
I found this one near the beach.
Close to the Grand Wailea in Wailea Maui.
It looks just like the ones on the mainland.
I sure hope it is not a cane toad: they are taking over the place in Australia.
I don't think I will report it; It looks the same ones that I played with as a kid in California.

The bird that looks something a secretary bird is free to roam in an area. This bird is the property of Kula Gardens.

KulaBotanicalGardLogo.GIF, 2 kB The other bird is in an aviary.
If you look close, you will see banding or darker shading in the picture. This is because the picture was taken through a wire fence! To get such a picture, place the camera in a manualy low f-stop or wide lense. Bring the camera as close to the wire as possible. You will be using as much glass lense area as you can to mitigate the wire. The wire will be out of focus and disolved over the intire picture. In my case this was no problem with such an overcast day anyway.
