The California poppy, Eschscholzia.Californica, is the state flower of California.
Poppy seeds contain small quantities of both morphine and codeine, but have a short shelf life of a few days.
The more powerful, Papaver.Somniferum, produces edible seeds,
and is also the source of the crude drug opium
which contains powerful medicinal alkaloids, analgesic opiates such as morphine, heroin and codeine.
Most species secrete latex when injured.

Conic seed Pods grow out of the flower.
Here is a yellow coastal poppy, that lives along side the orange.
The leaves of the small coastal Poppy appear quite "blue".
I thought that this red type of poppy was appropriate for the 4th of July.

The flower pods start out pointed down.
I suppose the purpose may be to prevent water from intering the flower before it is ready.
Fungus may be problematic in an inclosed area. But I do not know; I am just taking pictures...
